There was a knock on Dr. Goodman's door. He looked up.
"Come in, please." He called, and the door opened. In came an older man lead by a guide dog. Dr. Goodman smiled.
"Ah, George. Just in time." He said cheerily. "Sit down, let's check you up."
"Good morning, Doc." George said happily, finding the chair and sitting down.
"Aren't you in a happy mood?" Dr. Goodman said kindly, picking up his blood pressure monitor. "We'll start by checking your pressure." He said, as George liked it to be done. He understood him, of course; Being blind he has to know what's going on around him.
George nodded and held out his arm. As Dr. Goodman did the checking, George talked.
"I am in an extremely happy mood." George said. "You know, in the last weeks, my entire family suddenly came to me. I found my two daughters, my brother started talking to me again, and I happened to make a very good friend. I have been alone for so long – well, not entirely, my faithful Danny is here – but now..."
"Ah, I understand, I understand." Dr. Goodman chuckled. "I'm quite happy for you." He said calmly, looking at the numbers. "Blood pressure's normal, let's check your leg next." Dr. Goodman said, and George obediently uncovered his thigh.
"It's really amazing," George continued, while Dr. Goodman busied himself with the check-ups, "Because I never really expected it. It's like... The best surprise ever. And to think right before Christmas. This must be a gift from God, you know. I'm so thankful to him..."
"Not surprising, seeing how everything came together so splendidly." Dr. Goodman said warmly. "I want you to move your leg now, and tell me how you're feeling with the moves." He told George, and he did as he was told.
"Right, everything seems to be coming along nicely. If you continue using your medicaments, your leg should be fine in about a week. And for God's sake, as I told you before-"
"-No cholesterol, I know, I know, Doc." George laughed. "I might look like it, but actually I'm not stupid."
"I hope you're not. I'll see you next week." Dr. Goodman told George, and he left.
Dr. Goodman stared at the closed doors with a small smile on his lips. He was never good at showing his feelings; though he was always honest about what he said, people sometimes had the impression he didn't really care, and was only being polite with his smiles and good words. This was never the case; Dr. Goodman was a very sensitive person, especially when it came to happiness.
He knew George for over a year now, ever since he started rehabilitation on his leg after the vein was clogged; he had been coming for weekly check-ups ever since. Dr. Goodman pitied George's loneliness, and was now extremely happy for him that he had found his place.
After all, he thought to himself as he locked up his office, if someone finds true happiness, then they are already fulfilled.
Dr. Goodman believed he had found happiness. He believed it lied with his wife. He didn't see anything more relaxing and happy than spending the evening resting by the fireplace with her next to him. Although they couldn't have kids, George was okay with that now; he was happy – and in the long run, only that mattered.
